What Is The Preparation Required for SSC CGL Examination?

What is the SSC CGL EXAM?
Staff Selection Commission commonly referred to as SSC every year organises Combined Graduate Level (CGL) exam for the recruitment of eligible candidates to fill up about 30 posts under different departments. The eligibility criteria are graduation. The candidates who are appearing in final year are also eligible to take part in this exam provided they get their graduation degree before 1 August 2016.

The Exam Process will consist of a 3 Tier process which is as follows:-
SSC CGL Exam Tier I Pattern
It will be an Objective Type, pen and paper based written Examination containing overall 200 questions in 2 hours.These questions will be distributed equally between
  • Reasoning
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • General English
  • General Awareness
SSC CGL Exam Tier II Pattern
It will also be an Objective Type, pen and paper based written Examination. It will contain 4 Papers out of which two are mandatory and two are optional.
  • Quantitative Aptitude which is a mandatory paper consisting 100 questions and 2 hours duration
  • General English which is a mandatory paper consisting 200 questions and 2 hours duration
  • Statistics which is an optional paper consisting 100 questions and 2 hours duration
  • Finance & Economics which is an optional paper of 2 hours duration. A Number of questions is yet to be notified by SSC.
SSC CGL Exam Tier III Pattern
It includes Document verification and some optional tests like Computer Proficiency Test/ Skill Test for a few selected postsThis is a hierarchical process. It means if you clear the tier 1 round, you will have to appear for Tier 2. For a majority of the posts, based on your TiEr that is the major exam & Tier 3 is skill test/interview and Tier 2 marks you will be declared selected. For other posts, you have to undergo that skill test and computer proficiency test.
How to Prepare for SSC CGL Exam Tier 1 & 2
If you prepare well, you can clear the exam in a first attempt. But you have to prepare thoroughly for it. Preparation Tips for General Awareness:
General Awareness is one such section where you can’t predict as to what will come in the exam.
  • The syllabus is very wide and covers all the topics be it GK, History, Polity, Geography, Life Science and current affairs.
  • Read NCERT books from class 6 to 10 to improve your knowledge of History, Geography and polity.
  • For current affairs daily read a good newspaper. You can also refer some GK books and magazines. Also, keep an eye on what’s happening around you.
SSC Tier 3 Preparation Tips
This is the final Tier of the SSC CGL Exam. Only those competitors who qualify in all the papers of Tier 1 and Tier 2 as well clear the overall cutoff will be eligible for the Tier 3 exam and as per the requirement goes through the following processes:
Data Entry Skill Test:
This is an optional test and it will check your Data Entry Speed where the requirement is about 2000 key depressions in a time duration of 15 minutes and will only be of qualifying nature.
Computer Proficiency Test:
This is also an optional test and will comprise of three modules- Word Processing, Spreadsheet and Generation of Slides.
Document Verification:
This is the final step of the SSC CGL exam where you have to go for document verification. Keep in mind that you carry all the necessary documents else you may not be considered for final selection.
