English section is one of the most important
sections not for SSC-CGL but also for every competition exams
such as IBPS Bank exam. In SSC CGL, as it is asked in both Tier-1 & Tier-2 examinations,
without preparation for English section it’s impossible to score in English
section. Now you also here about SSC CGL new exam pattern so if you do not know
read my previous post SSC CGL New Exam Pattern.
Based on previous SSC CGL exam we can conclude that
questions in English section are divided into 5 basic categories:
- 1. English Grammar
- 2. Reading Comprehension
- 3. Sentence Error Correction
- 4. English Vocabulary
- 5. Synonyms and Antonyms
Now let’s read in detail about:
Grammar: According
to new SSC CGL pattern the
English section in consists of 25 questions in Tier-1 and 200 questions in
Tier-2, out of these 5-10 questions are dedicated to error correction & 5
questions are dedicated to correction of sentences. These are the two areas
where you need strong command over Grammar. You need to be well versed with all
the rules of Grammar, Tenses and their use, Subject Verb agreement is very
important as many Error correction questions can be solved using this.
Comprehension: Many students believe that Reading Comprehension
takes
too much time and thus it should be avoided. They feel that avoiding these questions
will save their time which they can utilize in other questions. However, in my advice the passages are easy and can be scored of easily. While doing a RC passage read the questions first and then go through the passage, this saves time trust me!

Vocabulary: For
vocabulary, I suggest read a newspaper daily (prefer The Hindu or The Times of India) make a notes of new words in a notebook along with their meanings,
synonyms, antonyms and example, revise them regularly. Try to use the vocabulary in
sentence formation, this way you'll learn quickly and help you in memorizing.
Synonyms & Antonyms: As far as SSC-CGL is concerned about, you can easily
prepare for topics like Synonyms, Antonyms, one-Word Substitution &
Idioms/phrases. Synonyms/Antonyms are repeated by SSC in Exam. So, solving
previous year papers would really help.
Take the above points into
consideration and you can easily nail this section! Also some online resources
help a lot, one of this is Gocareer and SSC CGL 2016 , which provides sectional tests for
English and other sections. Give out a lot of mocks and analyse your
performance there. Shortcomings can be removed only by your effort!
Read English Newspapers Regularly: To make English Strong Candidates should read national and
international newspaper daily to improve their English. It will take time and
they have to focus and concentrate on the news, words and sentence s which are
sued in the newspaper. Newspaper not only improves your English portion but
also help in GA portion. Students will need to learn the news words that come
in their way and this can help them to understand.

In case you need to work on your basics, then you HAVE to revise English grammar. There is no other option.
And to revise grammar, there has never been a book better than Wren And Martin (it has remained the top seller in multiple categories on Amazon for as long as I can remember). The book is available in two editions – one has colorful illustrations the other one is the regular black and white.
