How to Write: Imaginative Writing Sample

Imaginative Writing - Samples

Sample 1 : If youth but knew; If age but could…..

What if the youth were wiser…? What if the old were stronger…? What if the youth knew a little more than the strength they have…? What if the old were more strong than experienced…? One would say life would be so much better and greater. Well, no! I don't think so. The saying applies more to the past than to the present.

In the olden days, when life expectancy was less, people considered a 40 plus man old. People got married early, had children early and died early. Because modern medicines weren't there, people suffered from diseases and aged early. The mantle of responsibility fell on the children's shoulders very early. And, because all such things happened earlier than they should have, there was a mismatch. The youth, although given responsibilities, didn't have knowledge and experience. And, the old were a lot wiser, but hadn't the strength to do anything.

Well, as I said, that was the past.

Now, the advancements in medicine, science and technology have increased health, longevity and vigor. Even at forty, one may be referred to as being young. Life, in fact, starts at forty for some! Notwithstanding the ‘retirement' age of 58 or 60 prescribed by the government, no one actually retires socially. People continue to live an active and vigorous life using their knowledge and experience. It'd not be an exaggeration to say that no one gets really old in this age.

On the other hand, thanks to the advancements in education the youth are very knowledgeable and mature today. They take wise decisions. The youth, especially people in their 20s and early 30s, play an active role in the society. Technological advancements like the T.V., the internet etc, and the media keep the students well informed. There are many examples of young leaders, young CEOs and young scientists.

In conclusion, one can say that, the modern society is a good mix of knowledgeable youth and adventurous old. Hence, there's no question of "if youth knew, if age could" disparity. Now, we all know that youth KNOWS and age CAN!

Sample 2: 'If I were a billionaire'.

Who would not want to be a billionaire in these days of high technology, great communication and extreme ease of travel. There are so many things and comforts we want to buy but can't because we lack funds. I would buy and do quite a few things if I became a millionaire.

I have dreamed of a big and independent house with all the modern facilities, such as, air conditioning, garden, a modern kitchen, maids, swimming pool etc. A car would be the second thing that I would buy, especially a high-end one. There would also be some jewelry for the women folk and, I have always wanted a Rolex, so a Rolex for myself.

I may have sounded like a very materialistic person. Well, I have a conscience too. I would also do something for the poor. There are many poor in India deprived of many basic things like food, clothing, other amenities and, most importantly, education. I would give this to as many as the money would permit. I shall make efforts within reasonable limits and build a small school for the poor.

In addition to that, I would open an old-age home for the aged. There are many destitute seniors suffering because their sons and daughters abandoned them. I shall dedicate this to them with funds enough to run for years.

Well, I am a practical man, and so I would also set aside some money for my future, i.e., for my retirement. That will help me retire peacefully.

Sample 3: 'If I Were Invisible'

Well, this would seem funny, but I have often thought about being invisible. Especially, after having seen such things happen in movies like Harry Potter, Mr. India, etc., this thought has lingered in my mind for long. This is of course, wishful thinking, but what would I not do if I were invisible.

One, I'd feel like God as only the Almighty has the capacity to be invisible and that would be so exciting. That would mean, there wont be any tensions or problems in my life. That would also enable me to do things that the movie heroes, i.e., help people in distress. I would do everything possible to help them out of their trouble and without their knowledge. It would also help me amuse some people, especially, my family members and kids at school. I would do funny things for them and even poke fun to make them wonder what's happening.

As you know, our country is suffering from many issues like corruption, poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, etc. I would try to remove these evils. In every way possible, I would punish the corrupt officials, especially, the traffic cops, and other such most corrupt government agents. Like Robin-hood, I would rob from the rich and help the poor. Without anyone knowing about it, I would construct schools and colleges, etc. This would take care of the ills in our society.

Finally, I shall also do something for my family members. In addition to the amusement, I shall help my sister in her problems at school, my mother in her cooking, my father in his work.
